About Ed Thorn
Ed will not rest until a new Wario Land is announced.
Complete the Whisper of the Worm quest in Destiny 2 and you'll get the Exotic Whisper of the Worm sniper rifle. In this guide we'll take you through how to obtain it without too much fuss.
The Whisper of the Worm is an Exotic sniper rifle famed for its high damage output and easy handling. Fans of the Black Spindle from the original Destiny rejoice, it's very much the same weapon.
To get hold of it you'll need to complete a timed quest called The Whisper. It involves a lot of platforming and some tough fights, so we'd recommend bringing a fireteam with you.
Right, let's get stuck in.
How to get the Whisper of the Worm in Destiny 2
Destiny 2's always evolving, things chop and change all the time. This means the Whisper of the Worm quest has been a touch more accessible for those seeking out this beefy sniper.
Originally, you could only access this quest by jumping through a portal on Io that would appear at weekly reset time from Monday to Friday. Nowadays, you simply speak to the Drifter in the Tower, pick up the Quest and you're good to go.
You can access the quest by heading into your map, selecting Io, then big blue "The Whisper" quest icon.
Some things to bear in mind before you jump in:
- Make sure you bring a couple of friends with you.
- Equip some high damage, single shot weapons if possible. An auto-shotgun wouldn't go amiss either. Ad-clearing supers are also brilliant for combat sections.
- This quest has a 20 minute time limit. This might not seem lengthy, but it's actually not too bad once you get the hang of things.
Stage 1: Platforming, lots of platforming
When you first jump into the Whisper Quest, you'll be met with a timer, and not a lot else. It's up to you to find secret entrances and hop up onto hidden ledges. You're meant to be puzzled, then elated, then puzzled.
If you're on this page, you clearly don't have time for all this.
As the first section involves a lot of searching around, and platforming, and the like, it's better to watch it all in action.
This video by NeedlessSpace has you covered for a quick walkthrough of everything you need to get to the combat sections.
Stage 2: Blights, so many Blights
Once you've reached the first combat section with Taken Blights, the complex paths cease and the path forwards becomes very linear.
Your focus in every section should be to focus on getting rid of the Blights. Hopping into them with an auto shotgun or SMG is a great way of knocking them down quickly. There are a lot of ads and powerful enemies, so don't be afraid to use your supers and take your time. It's better to be safe and methodically clear sections, rather than jump in recklessly and die often.
Keep an eye out for Vandals and Hobgoblins who'll snipe you from high ground. These are often a huge source of damage for the enemy, so don't get caught out like us!
The final boss section involves a large arena with two tunnels on either side. There are tonnes of Blights and three bosses to take down. Make use of the tunnels if you need a safe spot to deal damage from, use your supers, and focus on taking down the Blights first before moving onto the bosses.
Once you've defeated all three bosses the Whisper of the Worm will be yours!
How to get the Whisper of the Worm Catalyst
Once you've finished the Whisper of the Worm quest, you'll unlock the opportunity to get its Exotic Catalyst. The Catalyst gives you the Box Breathing perk which boosts damage after aiming for a short period of time.
If you complete The Whisper quest on Heroic, you'll actually power up the Catalyst. There's a cap on this power boost of up to around 36% per week. You gain around 12% per mission completion and 2% per hidden chest. That's right, you can find hidden chests scattered throughout the mission.
Oracles from the Vault of Glass Destiny 1 Raid feature too. These are spawned when you find hidden chests and you'll need to shoot them in a specific order to unlock an 'Enigmatic Bluepoint' ship schematic.
Datto's put together a very useful breakdown on all this, so do make sure you give it a watch.
Some of Destiny 2's most sought after exotics are rotating out temporarily when Beyond Light drops. Make sure you've got yourself the Sleeper Simulant and Xenophage!
